Wisconsin wrongful death lawsuit settled for nearly $1 million
The family of a Portage, Wisconsin, man who died in police custody two years ago settled their wrongful death lawsuit last week for 950 thousand dollars.

The Portage Daily Register says that the family sued the police department and several officers after the man was shot in the head at close range during an October 2004 arrest. The man was handcuffed with both arms behind his back at the time. An inquest subsequently ruled the man's death a suicide. A trial in the lawsuit was scheduled to begin in July. By agreeing to pay the family nearly one million dollars the police admit no wrongdoing. The family is pursuing a criminal complaint by asking for a federal investigation.
