Florida cop arrested for assaulting girlfriend, 8 year old daughter
A police officer in Alachua, Florida, was arrested last week for assaulting his girlfriend and her 8 year old daughter.
The High Springs Herald says that officer Reginald Smith is charged with battery, aggravated battery, battery of a police officer, tampering with a witness and obstruction of law enforcement. Smith is accused of biting his girlfriend and then throwing a vacuum cleaner at her. He is also accused of striking his girlfriend and pushing her 8 year old daughter into a wall. After he was handcuffed he elbowed the arresting officer in the chest. In February 1998 he was charged with assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest but those charges were later dropped. Police have also responded to domestic disputes at the officers home at least twice in the past. On those occasions Smith was not arrested. Smith has been fired from his job twice. In both cases he was re-instated after an appeal. Smith is currently suspended from his job with pay.
